Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle treatments are designed to subtly rejuvenate your face and soften wrinkles using a muscle relaxant product in an injection form. Specifically, this wrinkle reduction treatment helps to reduce fine lines and smooth superficial wrinkles caused by everyday facial expressions such as smiling, frowning and squinting.*

Although anti-wrinkle injections have been used to treat various medical conditions for many years, such as migraine pain, TMJ pain and excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis), they were formally approved for cosmetic applications in Australia in 2002.

Using a tiny needle, our doctor injects drops of wrinkle relaxing solution into the muscles that create the wrinkle (not into the wrinkle itself). When injected, the solution blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area. This relaxes the muscle, which gradually softens the wrinkle or sometimes even makes it disappear.* The muscle spasms or movements that cause wrinkling also stop or are greatly reduced after the wrinkle reduction treatment.*

Each session at our Kew anti-ageing clinic in Melbourne takes approximately 30 minutes, and you will usually see results within three to seven to days of the wrinkle injection.* Maximum benefit is reached after one to two weeks.*

The effect is for several months.*

If your facial expressions are beginning to cause premature wrinkles and your skin is starting to naturally lose collagen, anti-wrinkle injections may be for you. Although wrinkle injections do help to reduce static wrinkles, they are most effective for superficial wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions.* As a result, under eye anti-aging wrinkle treatments and wrinkle reduction for the forehead are a popular choice for many.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not safe if you are pregnant.

Patients who receive anti-wrinkle injections at our Melbourne clinic report very little pain – mainly because the needles used at our beauty and cosmetic clinic are so tiny (i.e. micro-needles). However, you may experience some discomfort during the procedure, a feeling that is often described as ‘heavy pressure’.

Because the treatment requires no sedative or anaesthetic, you will be able to resume normal activities immediately afterwards.

Although complications are rare, some people may occasionally experience the following short-term effects for one to two weeks after receiving wrinkle reducing injections:

• Localised pain
• Headache
• Tenderness or bruising
• Droopy eyelid or eyebrow (very rare)

The likelihood of these adverse effects may increase if you are on antibiotics or other medications. That’s why full disclosure and consultation with our professional cosmetic physician is so important before undergoing treatment.

Importantly, anti-wrinkle injections are NOT safe for pregnant women, as they may harm the placenta.

The wrinkle reduction benefits last approximately four to seven months, depending on each individual. The effects wear off very gradually, at which point you may return for another treatment.

You are then able to undergo treatments indefinitely with no risk of long-term side effects.
